Why Would Your Child Require Lab Work or Imaging?
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends a schedule of lab work during well visits from infancy to childhood and through adolescence. Our key screenings include but are not limited to the following:
Iron Deficiency (Anemia) Screening: Iron deficiency anemia is when the blood doesn't have sufficient amounts of iron to produce healthy red blood cells or when the red blood cells aren't working as they should. Symptoms of anemia may include paleness, irritability, developmental delays, poor appetite, and low energy levels.
Blood Lead Levels Screening: This screening shows the amounts of lead in a child's blood. High lead levels can lead to severe symptoms, including loss of appetite, fatigue, irritability, poor growth, nausea, vomiting, joint and muscle weakness, and other complications.
Hyperlipidemia Screening: This test screens for high levels of fat or lipids in the blood. Hyperlipidemia can be caused by genetics or can result from lifestyle factors such as obesity, consuming fatty foods, diabetes, and a sedentary lifestyle.
Hypercholesterolemia: This test typically helps rule out high cholesterol levels in the blood. Left untreated, high cholesterol can raise the risk of future cardiovascular problems.
The following are additional reasons why Dr. Khaira may recommend lab work or imaging for your child:
Sick Visits: Dr. Khaira may recommend diagnostic lab work or imaging, depending on your child's unique needs. The goal is to identify the underlying causes of your child's illness to provide a targeted and effective treatment plan.
Allergy Blood Testing: Allergies may be triggered by various factors, including food or indoor or outdoor irritants. Dr. Khaira may recommend blood allergy testing to evaluate your child's immune response to common environmental, respiratory, or food allergens.
Chronic Disease Management: Lab work and imaging are often an essential component of assessing and monitoring chronic health conditions. Our goal is to monitor your child's health and intervene whenever needed to maintain optimal health.
Preoperative Evaluation/Clearance: Depending on your child's surgical procedure and unique healthcare needs, Dr. Khaira may request blood work, urinalysis, or other lab tests. She may also request diagnostic imaging, such as X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans, to further evaluate your child's health before anesthesia and surgery.
